The revival of Guyra cricket has been due to the dedication of many people. The selection of 5 Guyra lads in the Walter Taylor Shield for 2010 showcases perfectly the promising future of the sport in the area …

Where do you live and work?

I have lived in Guyra for most of my life and have owned and managed Dashas Hardware & Building supplies for the past 12 years.

What is the Walter Taylor Shield?

The Walter Taylor Shield Carnival is named in honour of one of the district’s most successful former representative cricketers.

Walter Taylor represented Armidale, Northern Tablelands and Northern NSW as an outstanding batsman and a very handy bowler over several decades. The under 15s carnival is growing from strength to strength each year, showcasing some of the best young talent from around the state.

How did you become involved?

I became involved in the Walter Taylor Shield team, because my son Adam is a part of the team. Knowing I have a great love for cricket and have played and had coaching roles in the past, coach Raj asked me to assist him.

Who are the Guyra residents selected to play this year?

We have 5 Guyra boys selected this year: Jake Brazier, a middle order impact batsman; Zac Atkin is our opening fast bowler and hard hitting tail end batsman; Tyson Burey is a medium paced bowler who will open the bowling with Zac. Corby Kliendienst  & Adam Lennon (Vice Captain) form our opening batting partnership & will hopefully secure a solid start for the team.

Who are the other players on the team?

Anil Rajanthan (captain) is a wicket keeper and strong middle order batsman.

Dean Heffernan is a left arm medium paced bowler & top order batsman.

Cameron Baker is the spin bowler of the team, bowling good leg spin.

Haydon Freeman is a middle order batsman.

Harrison King has a great batting technique capable of scoring runs and batting at number 3.

Jacob Osbourne is the bowling all rounder.

Nick Channon is another good all rounder with both bat and ball.

What are the teams greatest strengths?

Our Coach Raj believes we have a good solid side, who will be really competitive. Raj has coached some of these kids at a rep level since they were 10 yrs old.

I have personally seen these boys all become good mates and they have trust in each others abilities, this will be one of their biggest strengths

When does the competition start?

The Walter Taylor Shield begins 10 January 2011 in Armidale, with teams confirmed from Ballina, Hunter Valley, Penrith, Northern Knights, Sydney and Tamworth for the week long carnival (let’s hope for fine weather).

Are you doing any fundraising?

We are doing lots of fundraising, including BBQs and a premiere opening night of the Harry Potter Movie in November and also selling lots of raffle tickets over the next few months.

We hope for good support from the community. We also have to thank our many sponsors, who help with the enormous cost of running the week long carnival.

What can you say to encourage newcomers to play cricket?

I have had the privilege of making many great friends through cricket as Im sure these 12 boys will during the week. Cricket is a  great Australian game and is also a great way to keep fit & healthy.

Thank you Dasha.
