FOCUS caught up with funny man Ray Badran in the lead up to this year’s showcase …
So Ray, what inspires a man with a degree in medical science to pursue a career in comedy?
Well, on the one hand I had biology, chemistry and physiology. On the other hand, I had creativity, free booze and working 15 minutes a night. So the choice wasn’t that difficult.
Share with us your very first stand up experience…
You know that shiver down your spine you get when you remember something embarrassing you did? Well, like that – but in front of about 15 people. For three minutes.
What do you think is the formula to a good joke?
They say that comedy = tragedy + time, but I see it more like comedy = tragedy + time x fart noises.
Who or what do you find funny …
Larry David, Mitch Hedberg, Sacha Baron Cohen and so many more, are who I find funny.
If you could work with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?
All the above.
What’s been the biggest highlight of your comedy career?
Performing at the Sydney Opera House … Dressed as a gorilla – as a double for David Hasselhoff. He came out at the end of the show as a gorilla and sung a song. I ran across the stage and interacted with the MC beforehand in the gorilla suit.
You’re in the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase; what are you looking forward to about the tour?
Performing for the lovely people of Tamworth and Armidale.
Lastly, what’s your favourite dad joke?
A ham sandwich walks into a bar and orders a beer … And the bartender says, “I’m sorry, we don’t serve food here.”
