Pearce Eggert decided to start his own business at the age of 18 after a bad experience with a ‘cowboy’ carpet cleaner. With a passion for the industry, he started the business from a shipping container in the family back yard which grew into a successful business with a commercial shed at the age of 23.
Who are you, and what is your business?
My name is Pearce Eggert. I am 23 years old, and I am the owner/director of Bang For Ya Buck Armidale. We offer a range of services, including carpet steam cleaning, pest control and water restoration to the Armidale and New England community.
After having been out of school for two years and working in retail, I decided to start my own small business in 2011. Since establishment, Bang For Ya Buck has become a successful and well known local business that I pride myself on.
When I started, I offered lawn mowing and carpet steam cleaning services; however, fortunately within the past three years my business has boomed.
At the start of last year I was able to hire my twin sister, Elly, to conduct all administration duties, which allowed me to be out in the field full-time. As well as this, we have just purchased our fourth work vehicle and now lease our own commercial shed and office space.
Why did you choose Elly for the job?
Elly completed her Bachelor of Business Management Degree in 2015 with a scholarship for the Golden Key International Honour Society, which placed her in the top 15% of students in her degree based on academic achievement. We had never planned to be in business together, and I’m sure she never imagined working with me. However, I had a position for a full-time receptionist come available, as I could not keep up with the work – and she happily accepted.
I am extremely grateful to have her as part of the team – her vision, passion and determination have proven to align with my own. To her credit, she does a lot more than be a receptionist. As well as the office side of things, a lot of clients see her out in the field from time to time when she is managing other staff, conducting quotes and liaising with clients.
Tell us about the range of services you offer …
At the moment we offer carpet steam cleaning, pest control and water restoration services. I am a fully trained IICRC certified and registered technician for carpet steam cleaning and water restoration. I am also a licensed pest control professional. The main source of work for carpet steam cleaning comes from end of lease carpet steam cleaning, which we undertake for the majority of real estates. However, we also have a lot of private clients for residential properties, schools, business offices and government bodies. We also incorporate end of lease flea treatments, to make it convenient for the tenant whilst vacating. In relation to pest control, we offer treatment for common pests including fleas, spiders, cockroaches, wasps and rodents, plus more – all at a competitive price. Moreover, we also have full-time staff who undertake a range of services for social housing.
What is an IICRC certified firm? How can this benefit the client?
IICRC stands for The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. It is an internationally recognised certification that essentially means a consumer has hired an IICRC expert who will ensure their services are completed in accordance with the industry’s highest standards. We undertake regular training for our licences in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, to make certain we can provide this high quality of service to our valued clients. It also means that we conduct our work with honesty and integrity. As we are a IICRC certified firm, we are also recognised nationally by all major insurance companies.
Tell us a little bit about your most recent service expansion … water restoration.
Water restoration is a service that we offer, which I am very passionate about. When it comes to your home, it is important to ensure that if you have a water problem and your house becomes flooded, that you take the right steps in minimising the damage and the cost of expensive repairs. The first thing you need to do is call a qualified and IICRC trained technician, as soon as you are aware of the problem. At present we are the only certified firm in Armidale, NSW that is recognised by all insurers. Once you have contacted us, we will have a technician conduct a consultation straight away, with after hours service available. Our thermal imaging camera and moisture meter will determine how wet your property is and what steps need to be taken to dry your home in accordance with your insurer’s standards.
Depending on the severity of the problem, our team will extract all excess moisture from your property and/or dry the property. Most of my clients think that drying the carpet and/or floor coverings is enough; however, it’s not until they see the water wicking up the walls with my thermal imaging camera that they realise the most important part of their home is damaged – its structure. Fortunately, we have a large range of drying equipment available. As well as this, we can liaise with your insurer during the process and provide them with a formal written report to speed up your insurance claim.
Did you know? Once your property is affected by water, mould starts to form and spread throughout your property, meaning that each day you wait to hear from your insurance agency or leave the issue unresolved, the damages are increasing and your repair bill is going through the roof!
What are your plans for the future?
At the moment, my plans are to keep up with the workload! However, long term I am hoping to utilise my IICRC qualification in mould remediation. This involves identifying moisture sources of mould, assessing mould growth, containing the damage, removing the contamination, drying the affected area/s to ensure mould growth does not occur again and returning properties to a pre-loss condition. Stay tuned.
