Local man Greg Love has had a passion for all things mechanical from a young age. He is well known for his ability to build amazing Hotrods and bikes. Greg is very humble and is hesitant to acknowledge his talent, although Tracy from Focus got him to share a little about what he does in his spare time.
How long have you lived in Armidale, and when did you first find your interest in restoring cars and motor bikes?
I have lived in Armidale all my life and have raised our three children Angela, Kelly and Ben with my wife, Marianne, with all of them attending Newling Public School and Armidale High. They have all left home and gone on to doing great things in their lives.
I have had an interest in all things mechanical from an early age – pulling things apart and putting them back together again to see how they worked. I got my first motorbike at the age of 10, and I pulled it apart and put it together again, hopeful that it would be faster. My first motor vehicle was bought at age 13 and again, I pulled it apart and put it together again, this time with some added parts to make it go faster and a stylish brush paint job.
Tell us about some of your creations?
I built a lot of cars after that and enjoyed the challenge of getting vehicles that needed a complete rebuilds, which gave me a satisfaction of a completed job. Naturally, this led me to build my first hotrod 18 years ago, and I still have it today. I have built a few hotrods with my son Ben and worked on many hotrods for other people.
Now we are concentrating on our own vehicles and bikes.
Where do you get your designs and inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from early hotrod builders that manufactured most of the parts they used, not from “all chrome” and “bling”, just simply neat hotrods. My son, Ben, builds the cars and bikes with me now, and is extremely creative and skilled; I get inspiration from him too. We currently have a couple of bikes that we are building, plus an “A Model” Ford coupe for him. I also imported an “A Model” Ford coupe that I have sitting in the back of my shed, which we will rebuild at a later date.
When not building cars and motorbikes what can we find you doing?
One of my other great passions is camping and travel. We have spent a lot of time travelling around, camping on rivers and lakes in and around NSW and have plans for a lot more of this in the future. We also spend time travelling to visit our daughters, Angela, based in the top end of W.A. and Kelly, in London.
