Armidale born and bred Kelly Love was always creative from a young age. After a move to Japan working with a clothing designer, Kelly returned to Sydney to study Fashion Design and now has her own label and is living her dream in London.
Where are you originally from; tell us about your upbringing?
I was born in Armidale and remember spending a lot of time outdoors with other kids in the neighbourhood, which was one of the beauties of living in the countryside. I had a wonderful group of girlfriends that I spent so much time with, as we all lived quite close by, and I still have a close bond with all of them.
My parents brought me up with a very strong work ethic. They both worked really hard for us, and it was definitely them that inspired me to eventually start my own business. My dad and brother, Greg and Ben Love, run Armidale Windscreens & Automotive along with New England Rods Customs, and my mum, Marianne Love, works for The Benevolent Society.
I attended Armidale High School, which was also the school my dad, sister and brother attended. When I finished high school, I left Armidale to go to university before moving to Japan, then Sydney and later London, which is where I have been based for the past eight years.
What do you miss most about Armidale?
My family and friends.
When did your interest in design first begin?
I was always creative from a young age and loved art, textiles, photography and English at school. It wasn’t really until I moved to Japan and worked with a clothing designer that I knew it was what I wanted to pursue. I returned to Sydney to study fashion design and completely fell in love with the whole process of creating something unique.
What took you to the UK?
I knew I wanted to start my own label, and there is no better place to do this than London. I have Paris on my doorstep, where I have spent a lot of time showcasing the collections, and the main market that I sell into is Europe. I also love that I can travel to so many different places really easily, and London in itself is such a beautiful city with so much energy.
Tell us about your designs?
I specialise in hand drawn prints on silks and hand knitted wools and linen. I worked for a couture house when I finished studying, and this really influenced my decision to focus on beautiful fabrics and really high quality. I believe that the inside of a garment should be just as beautiful as the outside. My designs are feminine, but with a contemporary edge, and the label is now stocked in stores throughout the UK, Europe, US, Canada, China and Japan.
How can people view and purchase your clothing?
You can find a list of stockists on my website at www.kellylove.com and I also have an online store that ships worldwide.
Plans for the future?
My stockist list is growing each season, and I’m about to start working with an agent to extend the label into Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I’ll also be working on a couple of collaborations with well-known brands, which you’ll soon see details of on my Instagram at kelly_love_com
