Armidale Regional Council is inviting the whole community to join in a program of fun community events scheduled to coincide with Australia Day 2018.

The events are intended for all Australians – no matter where our personal stories began. What has Armidale Regional Council got planned for this year?

Council is hosting a program of community events that will run over three days in late January.

This is an opportunity to reflect on being Australian, celebrate contemporary Australia and recognise our history.

Council intends for this program of events to be an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the wonderful community we live in.

It is a time to let our hair down with family and friends to celebrate the unique lifestyle of our region, and of course Australia, that so many of us take for granted!

This is also a chance for us to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of some of our local heroes, who give so much to our community.

There are also awards for: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year. Awards will be presented at ceremonies across the region.

After the formalities, how will the community celebrate?

Awards and Citizenship Ceremonies will be held in Armidale, Guyra and Tingha – but that is just the beginning of community celebrations.

Everyone can gather for breakfast at 7am on Friday 26 January at the Ben Lomond Memorial Hall.

There will be a whole afternoon of activity and entertainment in Civic and Curtis Park in Armidale following ceremonies there on Friday 26 January. The event promises lots of fun for the whole family, with traditional games including the egg and spoon races, sack races and the famous lamington eating contest. Be sure to check out all the food stalls!

Bring a picnic blanket and settle in for the evening. Enjoy live music and entertainment and then finish off the day with a spectacular fireworks display!

A flag raising ceremony will be held in Guyra at Rotary Park on the New England Highway from 11am on Friday 26 January. Then for the rest of the day, the Guyra Pool will be holding a pool party with a BBQ.
